Pin Formats

Pinterest is every creative’s dream world. From sharing ideas to getting inspiration, it can all be done on Pinterest. But there is not just one way to do it, Pinterest offers a variety of pin formats, and we are going to dive into the features of each. It is important to use the format that best aligns with your brand’s goals and objectives.

Let’s start with what we all think of when we think of Pinterest, the standard pin. The standard pin includes an eye-catching image or video to highlight a product, recipe, article, app or photo. They are vertical images and can include logos and text overlay. Next is the video pin, although it is not as common yet, I bet we will be seeing it a lot more in the future as social media platforms transition from photo sharing sites to video sharing sites. The video pin plays in users feed and has a cover image to grab the user’s attention. Next is the product pin which are pins that show the price and availability of an item along with the link of the store sight to speed up the purchase process. Next are collections, which are pins with multiple images and allow pinners to showcase different features of a product, advertise multiple products or tell a brand story.

These next two pin formats are a spin off other social media platforms. The first is an idea pin which is similar to Instagram or Facebook stories. It is a multipage canvas to share ideas. The idea pins last forever and can include up to 20 pages of images, videos, stickers and text. Along with all that they can also include shoppable tags and AR try-ons. The other spin off is pin takes which is a similar concept as TikTok. Takes allows users to add their take on things by creating a pin in response to another pin. Knowing the different formats of pins will help you chose the best format for your marketing strategy.
