Fall Break

The leaves have changed colors and started to fall, pumpkin stands are packed with little orange carving pumpkins, seasonal menus are in full swing and I can’t forget to mention every college student’s favorite, fall break. For fall break we had two extra days off to relax after midterms, however for me fall break was not quite the picture of relaxing. Nor was it a trip to the pumpkin patch for cute pictures and apple cider.

While home I spent my time cleaning and painting. It wasn’t the kind of painting where you go to a class and follow an instructor as you watch your masterpiece come to life one stroke at a time. It was the kind of painting where you go from one house project to the next and to add a little pressure, there was a deadline.

For the past couple of weeks my parents have been attending training to become a foster family. Entering a new season of life can be overwhelming. As you ponder all the different situations that could arise as being a foster family, you are also tasked with ensuring your house is up to par. I was able to get most of the paining I needed to get done finished, however that didn’t seem to make the stress feel any less as our inspection in less than a week away.

As I drove back to Ohio Northern University thinking about my fall break, I was given a sense of peace and a simple reminder that it’s OK if the season of life you are in doesn’t look like everyone else’s. If your trip home is spent frantically painting instead of wandering around
a pumpkin patch. Although it wasn’t my dream fall break, it was still great to go home and get a change of scenery for a little bit. Through the stress there is still something beautiful in every season if you slow down and take it in.

  1. Preparing for new life sometimes seems steressful and anooying but I'm pretty sure you can have a great time with your new surroundings. My break was kind of busy so I cannot say I could have a enough break to reast my body but leaving studying a little bit is also something special for us, I guess.

  2. A change of scenery is a necessity for life. Sometimes it is better to spend fall break with your family doing these little tasks. I grew to appreciate it more as I got older.

  4. I am so excited that your family has decided to foster! This is something I would love to do when I am older. I am sorry you didn't get to do the fall traditions but those will always be there these new stories and experiences only happen once!

  5. Hi Maiya! I think that it is okay if things don’t look the way you envision them. You still have some time to do fall activities in the mix of your school schedule too. It’s so awesome that your parents are becoming foster parents. I’m sure the preparation is a lot, but will be worth it in the end!
