Crafting the Perfect Tweet

When we think of a tweet, we often just picture a quote or short saying. Whether that be from a business or a political figure it’s usually not much more than a couple words and maybe a hashtag or two. Although those are tweets, there are many other components that can be incorporated in a tweet. Let’s dive into the different components of a tweet.

The first and most widely used component is text. There used to be a 140-character text limit, however Twitter has since doubled that making the new limit 280 characters. However, because many are used to the fewer words, it is recommended to use 100 characters or fewer. Next is a photo. Twitters allows you to post up to four photos per tweet or one photo with an embedded URL. Research shows that tweets with images receive 18% more clicks that tweets without. Tweets with an image also have 89% more favorites and 150% more retweets than tweets without a photo.

Going along with photos, you can tag up to 10 people per photo. As far as videos on Twitter, videos can be up to 140 seconds. When posting a video on Twitter it is recommended to upload the video directly to Twitter and not from an outside site such as YouTube. On average, videos receive 2.5x more replies, 2.8x more retweets and 1.9x more likes when embedded directly to the platform.

The last component of a tweet is a GIF. You can use up to 1 GIF per tweet and they are a great way for a brand to show their humorous side. The options are endless when crafting the perfect tweet, however a few of the most important things to remember are, keep your text short, use photos and videos, and don’t be afraid to show a little humor with a GIF.

  1. I’ve actually used Twitter or had a Twitter account. I never realized how important the different components of a tweet can be. I always thought Twitter was a more unprofessional platform. I think following these guidelines and being intentional can make it more beneficial for a business.
